<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was certainly a great surprise! <a href="http://www.comicsforsinners.com/" target="_blank"><i>Comics For Sinners</i></a>, a web site dedicated to comic book news and reviews, has a feature where once a month they spotlight an indie comic book from Indyplanet. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDuZsScppvUGD1LJA1cqT5VmAb2MY5Q6eoDaK4mQ_JGvd8g8ZoEI_xoUCV7iBEBkp9yvLNwWMEcLwoTS3GKG9tCxrqRbeHA_NhnY58AW6tuhslKMa-0iBTo4XEMu3dy6XmR6iS/s1600/FullSizeRender.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="621" data-original-width="640" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDuZsScppvUGD1LJA1cqT5VmAb2MY5Q6eoDaK4mQ_JGvd8g8ZoEI_xoUCV7iBEBkp9yvLNwWMEcLwoTS3GKG9tCxrqRbeHA_NhnY58AW6tuhslKMa-0iBTo4XEMu3dy6XmR6iS/s320/FullSizeRender.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And here's the first concert post in a little bit: this time I returned to Jones Beach to finally see Muse live for the very first time. I'm pleased to say the show was everything I hoped it would be.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let's start was Thirty Seconds to Mars, a band I casually like but I'm not too familiar with beyond their singles. Whatever you think about Jared Leto (I happen to like him as he's in <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0485947/?ref_=nv_sr_3" target="_blank">two</a> of my <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180093/?ref_=nv_sr_1" target="_blank">favorite</a> movies), there's no doubt he was charismatic and sincere during this show. The best part for me was when Leto performed an acoustic version of "The Kill" <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6BoqtBBA34" target="_blank">while standing in the audience</a>. Here's their setlist:</div>
<dl class="dl-horizontal"><dd><ol>
<li>Up in the Air</li>
<li>Conquistador</li>
<li>This Is War</li>
<li>Kings and Queens</li>
<li>Alibi</li>
<li>The Kill (Bury Me)</li>
<li>City of Angels</li>
<li>(Unknown)<br />
</li>
<li>Do or Die</li>
<li>The Ocean</li>
<li>Closer to the Edge</li>
</ol>
</dd></dl>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then came the Muse portion of the show, and wow. Again, it was an extremely energetic performance that really engaged the audience. Here's the set list for their portion of the concert:</div>
<dl class="dl-horizontal"><dd><ol>
<li>Dig Down</li>
<li>[Drill Sergeant] + Psycho</li>
<li>Interlude</li>
<li>Hysteria</li>
<li>Resistance</li>
<li>Plug In Baby</li>
<li>The 2nd Law: Isolated System</li>
<li>Stockholm Syndrome</li>
<li>Supermassive Black Hole</li>
<li>The Unfortunate Not That New Kind of Kick</li>
<li>Madness</li>
<li>Dead Inside</li>
<li>Munich Jam</li>
<li>Starlight</li>
<li>Time Is Running Out</li>
<li>Mercy</li>
<li>The Globalist + Drones</li>
<li>Uprising</li>
<li>Knights of Cydonia</li>
</ol>
</dd></dl>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The highlights for me: lead singer Matt Bellamy performing "Starlight" <a href="https://youtu.be/R28vu52JmXw?t=1m47s" target="_blank">while standing with the audience</a>, seeing "Knights of Cydonia" live, and their incredible performance of "Mercy" (complete with confetti and smoke machines - this part was one of my favorite concert experiences <i>ever</i>).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'd like to share someone's YouTube video of "Mercy" to punctuate how much I enjoyed this part of the show; of course this video won't do the performance justice, but it sure makes me happy to look back and relive the experience.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrADNDQdyBvBj3VMweRbTkfGy3Wyk4s2b0Mc44rlR8EIiZbXTr9oKEJaMSGqIKwpNjG2k0o3qQTYayz8XxvSHI7SjbGjE0MV5f6O4aqPtKBitb9FAlxExGth2lOQiv5AiNcacM/s1600/round2.tiff" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="439" data-original-width="353" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrADNDQdyBvBj3VMweRbTkfGy3Wyk4s2b0Mc44rlR8EIiZbXTr9oKEJaMSGqIKwpNjG2k0o3qQTYayz8XxvSHI7SjbGjE0MV5f6O4aqPtKBitb9FAlxExGth2lOQiv5AiNcacM/s320/round2.tiff" width="257" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A few years back I plugged <a href="http://ralphyfilm.blogspot.com/2012/12/check-out-new-art-book-by-rafael-rivera.html">this collection of awesome art</a> from Rafael Rivera (a.k.a. DARAF). Well now, Rafael's back with <i>Jab, Jab, Whammo!!! The Art of Rafael Rivera A.K.A. DARAF Round 2</i> - and this book is even better than the first! Half the reason is because this time around, I have a full page foreword. It's a great read, but I'm a little biased.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.blurb.com/b/7971992-jab-jab-whammo-the-art-of-rafael-rivera-a-k-a-dara?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=bookstore-share" target="_blank">You can check the book out and preview it right here.</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Jab-Whammo-Rafael-RiveraA-K-DARAF/dp/1364085399/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497997626&sr=8-1&keywords=9781364085391" target="_blank">And you can also purchase the book at Amazon.com.</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have a hard copy of this book and I mean it when I say: it's gorgeous. It's extremely well put together and as alwaysm the art inside is extraordinary. Recall that Rafael has been my go-to artist since the days of <i>Purgatory Comics</i>. Most notably, he illustrated and colored the entire Purgatory Comics comic book (<a href="http://www.indyplanet.us/product/131018/" target="_blank">still available, still free to download</a>). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was really honored to write the foreword for this one, and it really made me reflect on how far back Rafael and I go now (nearly a decade!). His art is only getting better, as you'll see in this collection. Check it out!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Here's a short, easily digestible episode for you all. One of my oldest and dearest friends Laura joins me in the studio along with her husband/my pal Chris - and also Steph returns as well! Here, we discuss our own mortality, and how we learned about the concept of death. Morbid! But fun!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Okay I changed my mind since the <a href="http://ralphyfilm.blogspot.com/2017/03/20-minutes-gone-episode-26-steves.html">last post</a>... this episode shall be the "season finale" before a hiatus. I thought this would be a really good one to go out on for now.</div>
Ralphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17373664575874654499noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38262877.post-61067071498159832672017-03-20T17:40:00.001-05:002017-03-20T17:40:33.966-05:0020 Minutes Gone Episode 26: Steve's Brother<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
So generally how it works is, my cousin Steve pops over, we have a few drinks, share a few laughs, and then record some podcasts. This episode was the last one we recorded during a long session, so that might explain why we're a little extra loose and giggly. I said it MIGHT explain why.<br />
<br />
Anyway this episode is about Steve's brother and my good friend/family member. Enjoy! This will be the last episode for a little while as we're going on another hiatus to get some more recordings in the can. Now's a great time to catch up on old episodes!<br />

Don't let the title of this episode fool you; we're talking about butterflies, deer, mice...<i>adorable</i> animals. It just so happens that at certain points in time, these harmless critters scared the crap out of us. Here, we tell those stories...</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Cousin Steve is here for one of my favorite episodes yet. Back in 2008 we held a New Years Eve party and it wasn't quite the success that our <a href="http://ralphyfilm.blogspot.com/2016/10/20-minutes-gone-episode-16-halloween.html">Halloween parties</a> were. Still, some odd things took place that make for a hilarious podcast episode (in my opinionation).</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Happy holidays! There are so many great Christmas specials out there, but I feel like a few very important ones are getting lost in the shuffle - and they're not securing the legacies they may deserve. So in this special holiday episode of <i>20 Minutes Gone</i>, Steph and I review some of those endangered classics (and tell you how to find them).</div>

Cousin Steve returns and we talk about the Halloween parties we used to help throw that got wilder and wilder each year. The parties were a popular Halloween staple from 2004-2009 and <i>plenty</i> of crazy stories have emerged from them... including the one about why I'm a passed out wreck in this picture...</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This Sigur Ros show was much different than the previous performances I've seen, and for a couple of reasons: (1) it only featured three members of the band, with none of their string and bass players, and (2) it had no opening act and featured two sets with an intermission between. It was really nice to see a show so dramatically different than their usual tours.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The band did some crowd favorites but also mixed in a generous amount of new material (take my money already). There were times, admittedly, where I really missed the strings; they were noticeable absent from Starálfur (which thus cut the song's length almost in half). But at the same time, they did some new and great things with that song which really helped separate it from the previous two times I'd seen it performed.</div>

Extra short episode! My brothers join me once again and Paul shares a bizarre story about a racist babysitter he once had. Then, I tell the tale of how I was once trapped in a freestyle rap circle in the parking lot of a shady bar at two in the morning. Great stories in a super easy-to-digest 13-minute episode!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hey it's the first <a href="http://ralphyfilm.blogspot.com/search/label/concerts" target="_blank">concert post</a> in a while! I first saw Radiohead live way back in 2001 (long before this blog existed) and then I got to see them a second time in 2003. Both times were at Madison Square Garden and both were amazing shows. Radiohead has long been one of my favorite bands but unfortunately, I hadn't had a good chance to see them live again in over a decade.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, over 10 years later, I was able to see them once again at the Garden and it was worth the wait. They sound more energetic than ever, and with so many more unique albums now in their discography, there were various different styles throughout tonight's show. It seriously felt like seeing 5 different bands in one concert - and all 5 bands rocked.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The set list is below but highlights including hearing "Let Down" live for the first time ever, the live version of "Burn the Witch" being better than the album version, and hearing "No Surprises" live for the third time (it NEVER gets old).<br />

Last night was the
closing ceremony of the 2016 Long Island International Film Expo and as usual,
it was an amazing night that involved hundreds of incredible upcoming
filmmakers. To my surprise, our 13-minute short film <i>The Burden of Choice</i>
was nominated in two categories: Best LI Film (which <i>Halina</i> took home <a href="http://ralphyfilm.blogspot.com/2015/07/halina-wins-best-li-film-best.html"><span style="color: windowtext;">last year</span></a>) and Best Story.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
I'm so proud to say
that <i>The Burden of Choice</i> is the winner of the 2016 Best Story award!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I generally do not enjoy doing the film festival circuits (as those closest to me will tell you) but LIIFE continues to be the exception. Besides the recognition I receive from my Long Island community, they constantly put on an amazing ceremony with the effort you just don't see in many other festivals. I really appreciate how LIIFE goes the extra mile to support indie filmmakers, which is why it's <i>always</i> an honor to screen there.</div>

My favorite recording time for this show is late at night, after a few drinks with the guest. It's great to record relaxed and lose - as I did here with my brothers Paul and Steven. In this late night session, I tell them the story about my phone call with Jermaine Jackson over a decade ago... and then the show takes a hard left turn to us all sharing grade school gym class stories. All of it is good stuff... enjoy!</div>

Here's a really fun one. Ben, who I have dubbed a "professional collector", joins the show to discuss the psyche of collectors as well as some of his favorite possessions. We talk about Funko Pops, Godzilla, and all things Flash.<br />
<br />
I love this episode but I have to confess that it's already a little outdated. Toward the end, I mention an item I've long been in search of... which I've acquired since this recording (with help from Ben!).Ralphhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17373664575874654499noreply@blogger.com0
