The Original Bree Scene Discovered!

As I mentioned in the previous post, I did some spring cleaning today. Another thing I found were some handwritten scenes from Purgatory Comics, including the scene below (which I just typed up for the first time). This scene was the original Evan fantasy segment that would later become the infamous Bree Olson scene. As you'll see, originally the scene went in a much different direction, but ended exactly the same.

EVAN (OC)

I’ll save you!

Over by the open window, a mysterious costumed figure tries to enter. It’s Evan in a superhero suit complete with cape. He stumbles as he tries to climb in, until he eventually falls back outside completely.

Bree watches in awe. Suddenly there’s a knock on her bedroom door.

Come in?

The door flings open. Evan enters with leaves and twigs stuck to his costume.

Hey.

bree

Who are you?

evan

I’m Evan-is-the-Man Man. I have the power of awesome. And I have a red cape. What’s the problem ma’am?

bree

Well I was sleeping, and suddenly I felt a spider on me! I don’t know where it went! It could still be somewhere crawling on my hot, perfect body.

evan

Then I’d better check with my x-ray vision.

Beams come out of his eyes and hit her body, causing her clothes to somehow completely vanish.

evan

Whoops. Haven’t perfected this power yet—

They awkwardly stare at each other.

evan

I can keep this up all night.

bree

I guess I should at least dance then.

She snaps her fingers and sexy music begins playing. She dances around Evan.

There were a few reasons I had to ditch this original concept. One, the schedule just wasn't working out for a night shoot - so I had to write a new scene that took place during the day. And two, I wanted a slightly longer scene that was more centered around Bree . . . and something that gave her a chance to be the center of the humor rather than Evan. 

Also of note: I found this scene scribbled in a Blue's Clues notepad. Yup.

Some Random Updates

Hey all, sorry it's been so quiet. Here are just a few updates.

• Atoki Ileka, who we're all very proud of, tweeted a thank you to Warm Milk for a letter of recommendation that helped him get into the New York Film Academy. He promised he won't let us down. Also, Atoki really really likes tweeting.
• I have a conference call tomorrow with Circus Road Films, and I've also made a really sweet E-press kit for Purgatory Comics. Also purgatorycomics.com now reflects how they represent exclusive distribution queries.
• In early August we'll be doing a photoshoot at Hidden Pixels with Jonathan Zungre and Tim Kelly, both back in character. We're in the process of getting new photography for promotional material.
• Also congrats to Jonathan, who's now engaged!
• Has it been a year already? This week, the Long Island International Film Expo has been underway. The awards ceremony is tomorrow, so if you're on Long Island, grab some information from their web site.
• Our pal Bree Olson is on the cover of Playboy (nsfw) for August 2011. She's interviewed about her time with Charlie. Here's the cover:

There you go, plenty of updates. There's a lot of waiting going on right now and I apologize for the lack of exciting news, but wheels are always in motion!

E! Online did a story on Bree Olson's new non-porn film project Mancation, a low budget comedy with a former N*Sync member or something like that. The article originally reported tthat his was her first non-porn film, but luckily someone set them straight and they updated the article to mention Purgatory Comics. Yay!

The Truth About Bree Olson

Ahem. So. Okay, this isn't really a gossip blog, so I've been trying to not chime in too much about the Charlie Sheen mania on the Internets, and Bree's involvement. But I will say two things about it. One. It's OLSON. Not OLSEN. Spell her fake name right already. And I'm not just talking about blogs here . . .the NEW YORK POST is misspelling a person's name. A person they put on the front page this week. Then again, this is the New York Post we're talking about here.

Two. Bree is not only cool as hell, but smart. I picked her brain for an entire dinner the night before we shot her scene in Purgatory Comics. Then at Comic Con, I got to talk more with her. I don't feel like it's right to gossip about the personal things she told me, but I'll mention that this girl is smart. She knows what she's doing. She might genuinely love hanging around Charlie. She might love the attention. I'm not sure. But I'm pretty sure she's not being "tricked" or "taken in." She's one smart cookie and she'll be fine.

And dude (I guess this is "three"), as long as there are no drugs involved, who cares anyway. Charlie passed his test, and Bree is one of the few porn stars who doesn't touch that crap. So, awesome. They're love life right now. I'm jealous. Now, what I really wish for...is for at least one of these damn blogs to be like "Bree Olson, who appeared last year in Purgatory Comics" or some crap like that. Because that would be awesome. Just. Awesome.

Some Random Updates

Okay, I don't have a whole lot of news but since I can't have the latest post say Merry Christmas forever, I'll force this. So what's new so far in 2011?

Well our friend Bree Olson has been in a few gossip blogs. Charlie Sheen (star of the classic Men at Work, and I'm not being sarcastic I really do love that film but mostly because of 90s comedy great Dean Cameron) was in Vegas during the 2011 AVN Awards, and apparently he spent some up close and personal time with Bree, another porn star, and who knows what else when Charlie Sheen is involved. Anyway old news and I never claimed to be a breaking news blog, but the Purgatory Comics cast keep asking for me to comment on this event. So my comment is "eh."

Kevin Smith has gotten a lot of buzz early this year too when he announced at Sundance that he'll be touring with his new film Red State. His first stop is Radio City Music Hall, which I'm gonna try to grab some tickets to. I haven't seen Kevin since the IFC Clerks 2 premiere so I'd love to catch an early screening of his new flick. Here's a video of Kevin discussing his reasoning by this release tour, and also explaining his problems with the current film distribution system.

That's really it. I've written a few shorts and I'd love to shoot one this year. Plus I have a new Nikon D7000 which is an insanely badass HD camera, so I'm dying to use it. Of course if it happens I'll write all about it on this blog, so stay tuned! If you've heard about the nonstop snowstorms on the eastern coast, yeah I'm stuck in all that so productivity has been slow.

New York Comic Con - Day 2

At its fever pitch, the crowd at the 2nd day of New York Comic Con was crammed shoulder-to-shoulder. In other words, the place was packed.

The day started with a visit from our own Jonathan "Berner" Zungre! Seeing him again ruled.

I finally got to give him his trophy for Best Supporting Actor from the Long Island International Film Expo. "Wow, it's heavy," he replied . . . which is absolutely true. Poor guy had to carry it around for the rest of the con.

This is Sam from PatchTogether.com, one of our neighboring's booth. These guys were great and helped make the weekend a lot of fun. Check out their site, where they do customized figures and toys.

Tim "Evan" Kelly and Bob "Peter Whales" Socci both swung by after Jonathan left. Tim helped hold down the fort for the rest of the day.

Our friend from LIIFE Jim Cook also showed up. He mentioned trying to reach my cell so I pulled out my phone and noticed 6 missed calls. Worried I would miss Bree's arrival call, I rushed downstairs.

Bree arrived and we navigated the crowd to return to the booth. By the time we got there, her line had already formed! She got right to work doing signatures and pictures.

Let me tell you, this girl works. She spoke with every single fan at length, signed everything they had, did interviews and posed for pictures for 5 hours straight with only one break. And she never complained once. Bree rules.

By the end of the day, I was excited to have pushed out so many copies of the DVD. Not only can I now put my vacuum cleaner in my closet because the space is free, but we've finally reached the audience that is perfect for this movie: the comic fans. With all our screenings so far, it's been a challenge to get them to come to us. So, we went to them.

And we bribed them with a porn star.

The booth was only open for about a half hour on day 3 because we ran out of inventory. So on that day, I got to wander the con with my girlfriend and enjoy it finally. I won't be posting a report on that, but it was a much welcome break from the madness of days 1 & 2.

New York Comic Con - Day 1

Last weekend was the 2010 New York Comic Con (No. 5) at the Jacob Javitts Center. It's now Monday night and I'm still recovering! That's why for now I'll just cover day 1, which was Friday Oct 8th.

My brother Paul hopped the train with me to New York City to help out. Our booth placement was awesome...seriously, I was expecting a tiny spot near the bathroom. But instead we got a high traffic area that really helped us look professional.

We arrived at the booth to discover there was no table. Because I never ordered one. Because I assumed for some crazy reason you get one. So I had to run to their help desk and order one, and I won't reveal how much it cost but I'll say that for that amount, they should've let me keep the table and 10 additional tables while they're at it.

The lady said it would be at my booth in about 15 minutes. 45 minutes later, the table arrived and we set up. Ta-da!

We had the banner stand designed by my friend Rob, along with table art promoting Bree's Saturday appearance, and lots of DVDs and pins. We probably could've used more flair but give me a break, I just spent my rent on a 10x10 block of space and a table.

The first few hours was professionals and press only, so I mostly gave discs out free to network. I got to talk to a lot of great people and made plenty of new friends.

I gave the cast new mini-posters I printed out. I also had them all sign mine, which is already up on my wall looking raaad.

This was my first time running a convention booth and I found it exhausting, but also a lot of fun. The buttons were a tremendous hit and definitely drew some welcome attention our way. That was one thing I was very glad we did. The other big "draw" was the table stand advertising Bree's signing for Saturday.

Bree's high-recognition factor and huge fanbase, combined with insane convention attendance, led to an intense Saturday. And we'll save that for the next blog entry. But here's a quick hint about my feelings for the day...

...it friggin rocked.

New York Comic Con This Weekend!

As I've been advertising, Purgatory Comics has a table for all 3 days at this year's New York Comic Con! We are booth 2466. The con is this weekend, Oct 8th-10th at the Jacob Javits Center.

At the table at varied times will be Ralph (the writer/director), Tim Kelly (Evan), Jonathan Zungre (Berner), and Bob Socci (Peter Whales).

Adult film star Bree Olson will be at the table Saturday Oct 9th, from roughly 2pm - 7pm. She's available for pictures and will be signing Purgatory Comics DVDs. On a related night, tomorrow's her birthday!

Bree Olson Appearing at Comic Con

Our friend Bree Olson will be joining us October 9th - one day only - at the New York Comic Con! Purgatory Comics will have a table all 3 days of the con (Oct 8-10th). On Saturday from roughly 1pm-6pm, Penthouse Pet and adult film star Bree Olson will be signing copies of our DVD and mingling with fans!

We're excited to have Bree back . . . her fame has blown up since she filmed her hilarious scene in our film, and she's been spending a lot of time appearing on popular radio, and some great Internet sketches (check out PG Porn).

New York Comic Con - Confirmed!

As I mentioned not too long ago, this year Purgatory Comics will be at New York Comic Con, which takes place from October 8-10. That is now truly confirmed as I booked my table with the wonderful exhibitors today!

Our friend Bree Olson is also confirmed to appear on the 9th for a signing and meet and greet, so that's definitely going to be a fun day. And of course I've got some goodies cooking up to make this whole thing exciting.

But I can't stress this enough: there is an early bird ticket price that runs until April 30th and you can get those discounted tickets right here. You know you're going; book early and save!

Bob Meets Bree

Not since Godzilla met King Kong has a meet up been so Earth-shattering. Bree recently did a signing at the New Jersey Convention & Expo Center in Edison, NJ for Exxxotica (nsfw link there), and our own Bob Socci was there. Bob and Bree talked about the film a little and he gave her all the updates. I'm going to stop writing here and let the picture do the talking.

New Side Panels Mini-Doc: Bree Olson Interview

Here's a quick Side Panels mini-doc that I whipped up real quickly tonight. It shows a little of the Bree Olson interview footage that will be going to the DVD. Enjoy!

It really sucks to not have a title right now. It's hard to make publicity for a film with no title. I've heard some decent ones, but nothing has floored me yet. And I know everyone keeps saying it will come to me, but I kind of need that to happen real soon. It's getting to the point where it's holding some stuff up. I'm working on it!

On the Set: Day 12

Last year: while editing the scene that takes place at Union Square bar, I saw that I desperately needed some pick-up shots to fix it. So I decided I'd plan for yet another day of shooting. Then I decided that while I had the crew out, I'd shoot another scene that got cut long ago. See originally, there was a comedic scene in the script that had to get axed due to time and budget. Then, while editing the movie in post-production, I decided the scene needed to go back in. Without this mysterious scene, the pacing was off, and the comedy/drama ratio was off.

The scene involves a sexy girl character, so the casting call began. Then, through a series of networking, I got in touch with the manager of adult film star Bree Olson. We reached a great deal, and Bree was cast. Once I realized how popular Bree is, and how she's having pretty much the best year of her career right now, I decided to re-write the scene completely to give her more screentime and add some new gags in. And that's how we got "Untitled Ralph Project Scene 24A."

Bree flew in to JFK on April 26th and was escorted to her hotel by Darren of Five Star Elite car service. Darren's a great guy, he was very helpful, and they have awesome rates and services. Just saying, for future reference. I met Bree at the hotel and checked her in, and then we spent some time chatting, going over the film, and just goofing around. She is just an awesome person with a great head on her shoulders, she's very approachable, and she's got a personality that's very easy to fall in love with. She signed a few things, we rehearsed some, and then she snapped her hair extensions on me and took some pics with her iPhone. Loads of fun.

The next morning, we had Mike LaVoie back as director of photography, which is good because he almost couldn't make it. However, the rest of the crew was a new second unit: Clayton Combe as 1st AC, Tom Cryan as grip, and Frank Intorcia on sound. All three of these guys took the same train on the morning of April 27th 2008. Then I started getting the calls...the train was held up at a station nowhere near my area, and they had no idea when they'd be in. So with 3/4 of my crew missing indefinitely, I went to pick up Bree from her hotel and bring her to the set. So I pulled up, exited the Elantra, shut the door, and realized I locked my keys in there. And that, folks, registers somewhere in the top five embarrassing moments of my life.

At this point, I feared the day would be a disaster. But while Bree and I waited for the spare key to be dropped off, we got a little rehearsing in. The way I see it, we would've been doing the exact same thing at the house anyway since the crew was late. Soon after, we got to the house and it was time to start the shooting day. Tim Kelly returned for his new scene, and Angela Benedict returned to help on make-up. I also had a production assistant on hand and he was a tremendous help the entire day. We shot the scene, which was a lot of fun, and then we filmed a mini-interview with Bree for the DVD (although some of it will appear on this blog in the next mini-doc).

Everything went pretty smoothly. It was a lot to coordinate, but I had two months to pull it together, and I had a better idea of how to do things from my experiences last Fall. Even Angela called me later on and told me I did a much better job directing and keeping cool and the day was so smooth. Last Fall when we shot the bulk of the film, it was the most hectic time of my life, but half the reason was because I barely knew what I was doing. I'm glad it was such a learning experience, and it actually is a lot more fun for me to film now when I have a better idea of how to run the show and what to expect. And it's easier for me to not have panic attacks.

After dropping off Bree at the airport, the crew and I traveled to the Union Square bar to get some pickup shots. Our audio guy Frank got to go home early since we didn't need audio for these quick shots. At the bar, I met up with friends Alex, Keri, Kristina, and Jay. We filmed some much needed footage that will really help out with the scene, and then we wrapped production on the whole feature. For the third time.

Something crossed my mind at the end of the day. I remember when we first shot at the bar, it was just a bad experience for many reasons; our biggest being the rush factor. I wanted to get at least some pickup shots back then but we didn't have any time. Now months later, the idea to get those pickups turned into the idea to also shoot a scene with Bree. So I guess it's okay that things didn't work out the first time we were at the bar. I think what I'm saying, and I think the biggest thing I'm really taking away from this whole project, is that - for anything, not just the movie - every problem you come across is also an opportunity to make things better than they would've been.
